Design for the first thirty seconds
Think about what happens immediately after you enter: shoes come off, keys leave your hand, a coat or bag needs somewhere to go. Those actions define the storage you need.
Keep storage shallow
Deep furniture can make a narrow entrance difficult to pass. Wall hooks, slim shoe cabinets and narrow shelves are usually more useful than a conventional console table.
Give small objects one landing place
A tray or shallow bowl prevents keys, earbuds and receipts spreading across the nearest surface. Keep the container small so it cannot become general storage.
Use a mirror for function first
A mirror can bounce light and make an entrance feel larger, but its practical value is checking your appearance before leaving. Position it where it can actually be used.
Hide only what creates visual noise
Not everything has to be concealed. A few well-spaced hooks can look better than an oversized cupboard if they hold only the coats currently in rotation.
