How to Make a Small Living Room Feel Larger Without Making It Empty
A small living room needs breathing room, but removing everything is not the answer. Scale, sightlines and storage matter more.

Protect the main sightline
Stand at the entrance and identify the longest uninterrupted view through the room. Avoid placing tall storage or bulky furniture directly across it. A clear sightline makes the room feel deeper.
Use furniture with visible floor beneath it
Sofas, chairs and cabinets on legs allow more floor to remain visible. That small visual gap helps a compact room feel less heavy without requiring minimalist furniture.
Choose fewer pieces at the correct scale
Several undersized pieces can make a room feel more crowded than one properly proportioned sofa and a useful side table. Measure first and prioritise the pieces that support how the room is actually used.
Let storage disappear into the architecture
Closed storage in a colour close to the wall is visually quieter than a collection of baskets and small cabinets. If built-ins are not realistic, one tall cabinet can work better than several low storage units.
Use one larger rug
A rug that is too small can visually divide the floor into fragments. Where possible, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the main seating to sit on it.
