A Realistic Home Organisation System for People Who Hate Organising

The best system is not the one with the most containers. It is the one that makes putting things away easier than leaving them out.

Relaxed home organisation with open baskets for daily items and closed storage for visual clutter.

Edited for usefulness

Our guides prioritise practical, original advice. Product links may be affiliate links, but they should only appear when they add something useful.

Reduce the number of decisions

Every complicated category creates another decision. Instead of separating dozens of tiny item types, start with broad groups that match how you naturally search for things.

Store things where they are used

If scissors are always needed in the kitchen, storing every pair in an office because that feels more logical may create friction. Organisation should follow behaviour.

Use open storage for high-frequency items

Daily objects need the shortest possible path back to their place. Hooks, trays and open baskets are effective when the contents are edited and the category is clear.

Use closed storage for visual noise

Spare cables, paperwork and bulk supplies do not need to be visible. Closed cabinets and labelled boxes are useful here because access is less frequent.

Leave spare capacity

A system filled to one hundred percent fails as soon as one new item arrives. A little empty space is part of the system, not wasted storage.
